The Ministry of Economy and Energy was founded in December 1999 with the National Assembly’s decision to merge the Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Trade and Tourism.

In August 2005, the 40th National Assembly merged the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Energy and Energy Resources.

On the 27th of July 2009, the 41st National Assembly added the field "Tourism" to the Ministry of Economy and Energy. The new state institution of the 87th Bulgarian government was named Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism.

On the 7th of November 2014, the 43th National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria divided the existing Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism into the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Energy. The Ministry of Tourism was founded separately, too.
